FAQs

  • We build our soil and craft our amendments, ferments and teas from the highest-quality and sustainably-sourced ingredients, many made from material we grow or wildcraft on our certified organic vegetable farm. We never feed with bottle ingredients.

Our methods emphasize probiotics; fruit and plant ferments are crafted on site, as well as sprouted seed, herb, and compost teas. We mostly use plants to feed our plants, as they already have a near perfect balance of nutrients, as well as terpenes and other beneficial compounds that commercial amendments lack. We amend with biologically active top dress customized to both soil test results and strain preferences. We only provide our ecosystem with essential micronutrients found in nature; we choose our amendments with care to maintain consistent levels of bioavailability.

What we DON’T use: factory farm animal by-products that are commonly used in organic agriculture as a cheap source of fertility. By excluding them, our harvests are higher quality, ethical, and sustainable, with more fragrant bouquets and abundant terpene profiles. We never need to worry about nutrient overload that can be created by these by-products, which negatively impact both the burn quality and full aromatic experience of the flower.

We feed our plants as we feed ourselves!

  • We developed a custom blend of our native soil + living soil. We periodically test our soil and amend as needed.

One of the reasons that we chose to farm on this plot of land is because the native soil is amazingly fertile--our greenhouse beds are built directly into the ground so that we can take full advantage of it.

The reason that we grow in living soil is because it’s more sustainable and it gets the best results. Rather than throwing the soil away after every use like is done in conventional farming, we test the soil, amend as needed, and keep on using it. It gets better with every harvest, and after growing in this soil for the last 8 years, we hardly have to amend it anymore. Living organic soil is also the best thing to grow weed plants in, as earthworms, bacteria, fungi, protozoans, ciliates and micro/macro arthropods work symbiotically to improve tilth and break down nutrients which makes it easier for the plants to intake.

  • We use Jadam methods for pest control: https://en.jadam.kr/

We use Jadam herbal solution, strong teas of aromatic and pest repellant plants (sunchoke, gingko, thyme, oregano, rosemary, mint, blue gum eucalyptus, lemon geranium, lemongrass, mint, bay, lavender). We use Jadam wetting agent, a Castile soap that we make on the farm. We also use essential oils if needed, mostly in the summer when the aphid pressure outside is high.

We feel our diverse plantings of beneficial insectary plants also keep the pest pressure very minimal on our farm, and the pollinators happy as well!

  • Because everything that goes into our soil is food-grade, we do not need to “flush” anything out. We let the soil dry out a little bit more in the last two weeks of flower to halt the microbial breakdown of nutrients in the soil, letting the flowers finish and ripen.

  • We dry the plants in 60% humidity and 60°F temperature for 2 weeks before taking off all big leaves and storing in food grade containers for at least another week before trimming.

After trimming we go directly into glas jars for the final cure.

  • Sunlight with supplemental HID.

  • Before trimming: in light-tight food-grade bins in climate-controlled curing rooms.

Then flowers are trimmed directly into glass jars for curing, and then they are stored in a climate-controlled safe.

  • It is hand trimmed by beautiful fairies and elf princes and held only by the stem to keep the flowers pristine!

    • We are working towards a fully closed-loop farm. When we can’t make something that we need, we source it as locally as possible.

    • We only use the highest quality natural inputs and never use synthetics. We never use bottle food and instead make our own. We don’t use factory farm byproducts. We don’t do hydrocarbon extracts.

    • We grow in living organic soil which provides the best growing environment for the plants and is more sustainable.

    • We share information and ways of being more sustainable with our community. We think everyone should grow this way!

Our entire way of growing is modeled after nature because it’s more sustainable and gets the best results. Growing this way is hard work--it would be easier to bottle feed our plants, to use cheaper store-bought ingredients, to grow in pre-blended soil, etc.--but this way produces the most abundant terpene profiles, the stickiest weed, and is better for the planet and the consumer.

  • Other than sharing farming information with our community, we also support local charities with volunteers and funds. By supporting our business, you contribute to those charities too: a portion of your purchases help us to support Friends of Trees, the Cascade Raptor Center, Generosity Feeds and KBOO Community Radio among others.

If you are interested in partnering with us to support a cause or organization please reach out to info@cannassentials.net

  • We are Dragonfly Earth Medicine Pure certified. We have considered other certifications but decided against them because many allow farms to use inputs that we wouldn’t ever allow at Cannassentials. DEM Pure also isn’t something that you buy your way into; DEM Pure farms are held to rigorous standards that they must follow in order to qualify for the certification, and are held to those standards by the community.
